Builder Compared fairly

Squarespace makes a good-looking agency site. It does not make an agency content engine

Squarespace is the best-looking place to put a small agency site, and for a one-office, two-line practice that may be the whole answer. It stops being the answer when the site has to carry a page per coverage, a page per town, weekly corrections and an article cadence, because that is work rather than styling, and a builder does not do work.

The short answer

Handsome out of the box, and still a site you have to fill, structure and keep current.

  • Live in7 days
  • Monthlyfrom $127
  • Build fee$697, after launch
  • Speed90+ PageSpeed, guaranteed

01

Design out of the box is a real advantage

The templates are restrained, the type choices are sensible, and an agency that picks one and stays inside it will end up with something that looks composed. That matters in insurance, where the first impression decides whether a prospect believes there is a real office behind the site.

02

Where a template ends and a brand system begins

A template is a set of styles. A brand system is a set of decisions: how a carrier mark sits next to yours, what a coverage page always contains, where the disclaimer goes, how a producer photo is cropped, what the second-level heading looks like on the twelfth line page. Templates hold until the pages multiply and different people add them. Systems hold afterwards.

03

The structural work an agency site needs

Twelve line pages that each answer a real search. Office pages marked up as places with hours. Territory pages for the counties you write without an office in. Internal links between the lot. A coverage finder that narrows a visitor and lands the request in your management system with the line tagged. Articles every week that answer what your producers get asked. A builder will host all of that; it will not produce it.

04

Who keeps it true

The day a carrier appointment changes or a producer leaves, somebody has to edit the site. On Squarespace that is you. Here it is an email, and the change is live within the week without touching your revision count.

Side by side Twelve axes

Squarespace and a managed studio site, line by line

The same twelve axes on every comparison page, so the answers can be read against each other. Nothing in the left column is stated as fact about a specific plan or price; where a claim needs a source, it is cited at the foot of this page.

What you are comparingSquarespaceInsuranceWebStudio
Speed and Core Web VitalsHow quickly a page appears on a phone with weak signal.Respectable on a good template, heavier once galleries, fonts and embeds accumulate.Static pages with almost no JavaScript, guaranteed on every page we build and host.
SEO controlWhether titles, URLs, headings and internal links can be set properly.Titles, descriptions and URLs are editable; strategy and depth are yours. One primary keyword per page, written titles and descriptions, deliberate internal linking, generated sitemaps.
Schema and JSON-LDStructured data that tells search engines what each page is.Some structured data is automatic; agency and line-level markup is not.Organization, LocalBusiness per office, Service per line, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList from your own data.
AEO and GEO readinessBeing the extracted answer, and being readable by AI assistants.Down to how the pages are written.Answer-first sections, question-shaped headings, visible FAQ blocks, llms.txt and consistent entity naming.
Hosting and securityWhere it runs, who patches it, who watches it.Included, reliable, nothing to think about. A genuine strength.Cloudflare hosting, SSL, backups, headers and monitoring, with the speed guarantee attached.
Maintenance burdenWhat lands on somebody at the agency every month. No technical upkeep, all content upkeep. Both handled. Weekly detail updates plus revisions with a written turnaround.
Who does the workWhose hours go into the site after launch. You, or a Squarespace designer for a one-off project. The studio, continuously, on the monthly fee.
Content and blogWho writes the articles, and how often.A decent blog with nobody in it.Researched, cited articles every week on every plan.
Design qualityWhether the site reads as a designed thing or an assembled one.Strong at launch, drifts as pages are added by different hands.A system, not a template, so page forty looks like page one.
Accessibility and compliance pagesPolicy pages, consent, disclaimers, readable contrast.Generic policy pages and a basic banner; insurance disclaimers are yours.Policy pages written for the site, consent that gates scripts, accessibility built in, disclaimers placed by design.
Cost modelWhat you pay, when, and what is bundled.A small subscription plus a designer if you hire one, plus your hours. One monthly fee with design, hosting, domain, updates and articles inside it.
Ownership and lock-inWhose domain, whose words, and what leaving looks like.Your content is yours; the site does not leave the platform.Domain and content yours, exported within 14 days if you leave.

Be honest

When Squarespace is the better answer

  • You are a single producer with a simple storyOne office, one or two lines, no ambition to rank in six towns: a handsome template is proportionate.
  • You want a beautiful site and will maintain itIf you will genuinely keep it current, the platform is not what is holding you back.
  • Photography is the pointFor a portfolio-led site, the gallery tooling is lovely, and agency sites rarely need it.

And when not

When a managed studio site wins for an agency

  • Your book is wider than your siteIf you write ten lines and the site explains three, the site is costing you the other seven.
  • You need local pages in several townsOne address in a footer cannot rank across a county line.
  • You want the writing doneTwo researched articles a week is the difference between a blog and a content engine.

Together Switching, and running both

How the two fit, and how a switch actually runs

  1. 01

    Migrating a Squarespace site

We take the copy and images worth keeping, rebuild them in your brand system, map every URL with value to a 301, keep the titles that are working, and submit the new sitemap on launch day. Your current site stays live until the domain switches.

  2. 02

    If you are mid-subscription

Keep it until your renewal if you like. Nothing about the build requires you to cancel first, and the two only overlap on launch day.

Agencies who made this decision

What changed after the move, from real agency and broker staff, in their own words.

  • Content audit and update process for commercial coverage reviews

They tracked down every place our commercial coverage reviews information appeared; there were more than we admitted. Everything now lives in one maintained reference, with the duplicates retired or redirected. Maintaining the site finally feels manageable.

  • Page migration and redirect mapping for commercial coverage reviews

Everyone talks about the new design; I cared more about where the old commercial coverage reviews links would land. We reviewed the full redirect map before launch and checked the destinations ourselves. I could share the new site knowing the old links had been taken seriously.

Questions about Squarespace and a managed site

Our Squarespace site looks good. Why change it?

Looks are the part it does well. Change it when the site cannot carry a page per line and per town, when nobody has updated it in a year, or when quote requests arrive as bare emails a producer has to decode.

Can you match our current design?

We can carry your colors, mark and photography direction into the brand system. We will not copy a template, because the point of the system is that it holds across pages a template cannot.

Do we lose our blog?

No. Posts come across, URLs are preserved or redirected, and the formatting is rebuilt in your new system.

What about our contact form?

It is replaced by the coverage finder, which narrows a visitor to the right line and lands a tagged request in your management system instead of an inbox.

Is your site as easy to change as a builder?

Easier, because you do not change it. You send the change; weekly detail updates handle the small facts and revisions handle everything larger, within the turnaround in your plan.

Can we keep our domain?

Yes. It stays in your name and simply points somewhere new. If you do not have one, we register one for you at no cost while the plan runs.

How many pages do we get?

As many as your book needs: a page per line you write, a page per office, territory pages for the areas you serve, plus the articles that accumulate every week.

What if we want to go back?

Cancel by email with the notice in the terms. We export your content and articles within 14 days and the domain is yours to point wherever you want.
